Climate Justice Meeting for Worship
300 Quakers from around the UK met in London in April to demonstrate outside the Houses of Parliament about Climate Justice. It was:
A joyous occasion
Non disruptive and peaceful
A massive protest with a total of around 60,000 people attending altogether from some 200 organisations.
But we had a very serious concern – human induced climate change and its global impact.
Amongst the 300 Quakers was a group of 14 F/friends from Kendal and Sedbergh Area Meeting.
Of course, the crisis of climate change hasn’t gone away so we are continuing to be very concerned, not really so much for ourselves but particularly for the generations that follow us. Some of you will also be worried by this and some may not know what to do about it. Here is an invitation…
We will be holding an open-air witness and Meeting for Worship about this matter in Kendal town centre on the fist Monday of every month for at least the next three months. We would really welcome you as a member of a church in the WDMC.
The next one will be on Monday 2nd October
45-minute Meeting for Worship starting at 10.30 am
Some people will be standing and some sitting for the Meeting. Please bring your own fold up stool or chair, if you wish. There is some existing seating in the Birdcage area.
Please feel free to also bring your own hot drink and snack to have in the period after the Meeting for Worship if you can spare the time to chat with others who attend
A banner will be displayed and leaflets from Quakers in Britain will be given out to the public during the Meeting for Worship
Application has been made to Kendal Town Council to use the Birdcage Area for this Meeting for Worship and permission has been received.
It would help us if we had an idea of likely numbers attending but this is not essential. Friendly feet firmly on the ground in Kendal are actually what we need! At our last Birdcage climate event we had 55 people attend which was a great response. We are hoping to gradually build on that number, though we recognise that autumn and winter months may inhibit people a little.
